Ruedi to go

In these quick explainers, our conductor Ruedi Lutz gets straight to the heart of a variety of musical concepts. Clear, concise, entertaining. Simply “Ruedi to go”!

basso continuo

The concept of basso continuo (thorough bass) is inextricably linked to harmonic theory. In a baroque ensemble, the bassline is usually played by the harpsichord, bassoon, cello and double bass, and the written notes are often marked with numerals and accidentals – a kind of code indicating the chords to “realise” the harmonies (figured bass). In this video, Rudolf Lutz demonstrates a harmonic realisation of the chorale “Lobe den Herrn” that includes a diminished seventh chord.

How is this form of improvisation learned? By beginning with very simple pieces. Mastering the art of basso continuo is a lifelong journey!
